Additional information about community-based parking from Bosch.

Imagine never again having to waste your time searching for a vacant parking space. Imagine being able to access the latest parking information conveniently at any time and knowing exactly where suitable curbside parking spots are located. Imagine always being guided directly to the nearest parking space without having to drive around and around. Finding a parking space quickly not only saves you valuable time, it also reduces stress, saves fuel, and protects the environment.

All these benefits become a part of everyday life thanks to community-based parking. With the connected solution, Bosch turns the vehicle into a sensor in the internet of things, making your search for a parking space more efficient and convenient.

As a pioneer in connected mobility, Bosch has developed an end-to-end solution to help drivers find parking in city centers. It covers all aspects, from identifying available parking spaces to displaying desired parking information in the vehicle. With this production-ready system, Bosch is delivering yet another innovative technology for connected and automated parking solutions. What is more, it is not tied to any one platform or provider. One of the really neat features of the solution is that the up-to-date parking data needed for the system is generated by the users themselves and shared with the other drivers via the cloud.

One for all and all for one thanks to the cloud

Community-based parking – the name basically says it all: the community of users ensures that every participating car driver finds an available parking space as easily as possible. The users’ vehicles identify spaces at the side of the road with their on-board sensors as they drive by. Newer vehicles are equipped with these sensors as standard, so no retrofitting is necessary. The collected data is sent to the cloud anonymously and processed there automatically. Smart software turns the raw data into useful information for drivers searching for a parking space. This includes a parking space map, parking predictions, real-time occupancy maps, and information on special parking situations.

The data benefits all users, enabling them to view parking information that is highly relevant to them in their vehicle at any time. The vacant parking spaces that are shown precisely match the requirements specified by the driver. So they are large enough for the respective vehicle and are, for instance, equipped with a charging station. All this adds up to a surprisingly straightforward user experience when searching for a parking spot in cities where parking space is at a premium. It does not matter which vehicle an individual user has, since the data can be collected and used by all vehicle makes.

Flexibility for customers: Bosch can supply just the parking data or the highly sophisticated system solution too

Community-based parking is a solution for all manufacturers that enables information about available parking to be collected and displayed by the vehicle. Thanks to a universal interface (API), the service is not dependent on the use of particular hardware – it can be implemented with Bosch components or using the manufacturer’s own hardware. Bosch takes care of the data processing and making the information available.

If desired, Bosch can also supply an end-to-end solution. This includes sensors for detecting vacant parking spaces, the connectivity hardware for sending and receiving data, and systems for displaying the information in the car.

Revolutionize the search for parking with help from the community

Launch in 30 cities

Serial launch in 30 cities

Bosch has already conducted several pilot projects to help spread the word about community-based parking. In 2018, the solution will be launched in 30 cities in Europe and the USA.

To help this parking revolution gain momentum and make it a success that benefits everyone, what is now needed is the full commitment of the community and best possible support from car manufacturers.

Connected as standard

Most modern vehicles already have parking sensors and connectivity hardware on board as standard. This enables transmitter vehicles to reliably detect parking spaces and send this data to the cloud in encrypted form. Receiver vehicles do not need any additional equipment fitted.

Vacant parking spaces can be displayed on the vehicle’s own on-board navigation unit or on a standard smartphone. This means drivers can also benefit from the convenient community-based parking service without having to fulfill any additional technical requirements.
